Organic Honey

We believe that proper hive management, not hive numbers is key to producing both a high quality and quantity of honey. We have a strong focus on innovating and improving our techniques, both in the hive and for our highly skilled team of beekeepers.

This honey is free from antibiotics, sugar supplement, glyphosate and residues.

We operate our own extraction plant which keeps our process chain small and ensures high quality standards are maintained from the beehive to the store shelf.

McBell Organic have a strong family relationship with a boutique honey packing company in Christchurch. Our honey is control granulated to ensure a 'melt in the mouth' smooth  and creamy texture. This is achieved through a slow, periodic stirring that takes multiple days to reach the perfect consistency. Manuka honey will naturally granulate over time and can become quite lumpy. By slowly stirring the honey,  smaller granules are formed throughout the product and a rich, silky honey is the final result.

After the summer Manuka crop has been harvested, if the hives do not have access to Beechwood honeydew to feed on over winter, they are shifted to a beech forest to gather stores. We believe this makes for a stronger, healthier hive come spring time. Pollen substitutes are not able to be used in organic beehives so our hive placement and stocking rates for available natural sources need to be managed carefully.

Manuka honey is produced by bees foraging nectar and pollen from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) which is native to New Zealand. MGO or Methylglyoxal is the active compound found naturally occurring in Manuka honey.

A higher measurement of MGO shows a more potent and pure honey.
